Disclaimer (a legal necessity)

The following information is intended for use only as a general guideline and we do not warrant the correctness of it. If you are intending to purchase a kit vehicle, assemble your own, build a hot rod or otherwise purchase a vehicle or vehicle components that are not already supplied with an official title, it is essential that you contact the appropriate authorities in your state or province.

Title & Registration

Michigan has a relatively simple process for titling an owner built vehicle, which is what most kit cars and hot rods are classified as. You are required to have receipts for all major components of the vehicle (body, frame, engine, etc.). Next you need an application for title from the of office of the Secretary of State.

After titling, the vehicle must be inspected by an officer of the law (you can pick which police agency you go to) and must comply with a standard set of rules such as lights, turn signals, etc..

Once this is complete, the registration process is the same as for any vehicle.

Emissions Testing

Emissions testing is not required in the state of Michigan.
