Disclaimer (a legal necessity)
The following information is intended for use only as a general guideline and we do not warrant the correctness of it. If you are intending to purchase a kit vehicle, assemble your own, build a hot rod or otherwise purchase a vehicle or vehicle components that are not already supplied with an official title, it is essential that you contact the appropriate authorities in your state or province.
Title & Registration
The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles is the responsible government organisation. The requirements for titling are relatively simple:
- Retain all receipts, invoices, etc..
- Take pictures during the assembly process.
- When the vehicle is complete, apply to the BMV for a state VIN.
- Once VIN is assigned arrange for a VIN inspection by state police.
- With the completed VIN inspection form in hand, go to BMV for title.
- Once title is received, apply for registration.
Emissions
Emissions testing is required only in Lake and Porter counties. All other areas are testing free.
For those vehicles that need to be tested, the year of the vehicle is considered to be the year of titling. This means that all new kit cars need to be OBD II compliant.
